Reflections on Sincerity

From: taintwhatyoudo.wordpress.com |

This past weekend I attended Camp Hollywood XIV, while I could talk about what I got out of the classes I took or how awesome the music was, there is a theme from this weekend that still resonates soundly with me. That theme is the idea of sincerity in ones dancing.

Camp Hollywood 2011 – Balboa

From: vforvintageblog.blogspot.com |

This past weekend was the 14th annual Camp Hollywood, and as usual we packed up the car and drove 20 minutes to the LAX Marriott hotel for our "big" summer getaway. Hey, a couple days off work? I'll take it.

The Herrang Dance Camp: The Culinary Experience

From: www.rikomatic.com |

As a food-obsessed dancer, going to rural Sweden for the Herrang Dance Camp was a mixed bag for me.  Sure, some of the best swing dancers, swing musicians and teachers are there from around the world. But what am I going to EAT all day and night?  I mean, you can only have so many Swedish meatballs.

Dancing for a Cause

From: allthecatsjoinin.wordpress.com |

This past weekend, Susanne and I hosted our yearly Luau dance which is always a crazy fun time. We partnered up with two dancers who are fund raising for an organization called 2Seeds that develops sustainable agricultural projects in Africa.

National Dance Day Part 2 of 2: Join The Celebration!

From: www.atomicballroom.com |

Just under two weeks until the SECOND ANNUAL NATIONAL DANCE DAY!  Nigel Lythgoe, co-creator and judge of FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance and founder of the Dizzy Feet Foundation, joined with the Larry King Cardiac Foundation to establish the Dance 4 Your Life initiative to promote dance as a daily part of an active, healthy lifestyle.  And last year, Congress recognized the last Saturday in July as NATIONAL DANCE DAY to encourage the nation, young and old, to move!

The Carling Family Band : The Quintessential Lindy Hop Band (video)

From: www.rikomatic.com |

Last night was one of those frustrating / inspiring experiences that happens often in Herrang, where you have the most amazing band playing your favorite song, a roomful of the best lindy dancers in the world -- and you can't dance.

Jam Circles and Confronting Your Inner Critic

From: www.rikomatic.com |

So as I mentioned in the previous post, there was a spontaneous jam circle at the end of Lennert and W's class yesterday in Herrang. Inspired by the music, I jumped in with one of the follows from our class and did a short sequence -- something like a couple of swingouts, a do-si-do, and a swing out to a slide to get out of the circle.  It was easy and fun. Afterwards some other people jumped in, including some instructors and other more advanced dancers, including Max, Peter Strom, Mia, and Frida Bourg.

Herrang Shenanigans: Class interrupted by Swing Band (video)

From: www.rikomatic.com |

This is the kind of stuff that makes me remember why I love the Herrang Dance Camp so much.  This was my final class of the week with Lennert (director of the camp) and his partner W.

Let’s Put on a Show!: Swing Kids Perform and Cabaret Night

From: www.rikomatic.com |

Last night was one of my favorite events at the Herrang Dance Camp: Cabaret Night.  It's the time when people bust out their best usually non-swing-related talents to share with the camp.  With some of the most gifted dancers in the world in Herrang, you know they have many other tricks up their sleeve!

I am Lindy Hop

From: followervariations.wordpress.com |

Bead 109 has a lovely post about “We Are Always Ballet“. I think the following sentiments will resonate with many of us who happened to stumble across Lindy Hop because we needed a diversion from work or an emotional escape from life’s challenges:
