Those “So-Cal” DancersMarch 01, 2011I remember awhile back I was writing one of Bobby White’s posts on Swungover titled “The Old Timer (Part 2: A Release of Energy)” and got a smirk on my face |

Shopping Challenge: Norfolk JacketMarch 01, 2011Last month I put out the call for a shopping challenge, asking Lindy Shopper readers to send me on a mission for your heart’s desire, the garment you have been unable to find and add to your wardrobe. My first response was from Rich Werden, a fellow dancer and vintage clothing enthusiast who I met last year at All Balboa Weekend. One of his challenges (email subject line: “You want a challenge!?!?”) was to find a Norfolk jacket, or as Rich more aptly put it: |
John Mills 1912 – 2011March 01, 2011John Mills was a legendary dancer and performer and one of the most accomplished dancers I’ve ever seen. He revolutionized Lindy Hop, Balboa, and tap. He was also one heck of a nice guy and was always encouraging to beginner dancers. The one time I was privileged to dance with him he was nothing but a consummate gentleman, absolutely hilarious and such a passionate dancer. |
6-count or 8-count? It’s 42.March 01, 2011In classes, I often get asked “Is that a six-count move or an eight-count move?” Of course, the answer to all such mysteries of life is 42. When you’re first learning, you need something to hang your hat on, some structure to help you hold all of this crazy dancing together. Six-count and eight-count provide that structure, but there comes a time when every dancer has to let go of the six and eight count training wheels. |
Hair Tutorial – Day 28February 28, 2011It’s the last day for hair tutorial month and I’ve learned so much. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep myself from being so dull with my hair (even though I think hiding under a beret is nice….and a basic ponytail is rather can be rather pretty)! |
R.I.P., John Mills, 1912 – 2011February 26, 2011Thursday Night (I believe) Tap dancer, swing dancer, and husband to SoCal swing legend Ann Mills passed away. |
Andrew J. Nemr Talks Tap and SwingFebruary 26, 2011Mentored by Gregory Hines, Andrew is an outstanding tap dancer with a deep passion for the dance and its history. He runs his own tap company, Cats Paying Dues (CPD), which will be presenting his show, Echoes in Time, on March 4th at the Peter Jay Sharpe Theater in NYC. I caught up with him in preparation for the show to chat a bit about some of his mentors, the connection between tap and lindy, and the upcoming performance. |
Hair Tutorial – Day 26 – Snoody VictoryFebruary 26, 2011Ladies, ladies, ladies! This might be one of my favorite videos! Well…..let me be specific. I love what the end product looks like and how quickly she whips through how she does what she does. I don’t like that the music is so loud and frantic, but thank goodness for my mute button! |
I’m in a New Orleans State of MindFebruary 25, 2011I’m in a New Orleans State of Mind today. My body may be in SoCal but my brain is on Bourbon Street. This is a momentous year for me. In five weeks I’ll be graduating from college, and less than one week later I’ll be heading to New Orleans to attend the French Quarter Festival and Fleur de Lindy (killer-diller graduation present for myself, huh?). |
Hair Tutorial – Day 25 – Fabulous FridayFebruary 25, 2011Ok, this one blows my mind. I’ve never thought to twist my hair while braiding it. I think I’ll need to try this on someone first so I can have some sense about the dexterity it takes, but I dig it! It’s edgier than how the girls would have worn their hair in the 1940s, but I still think it’s worthy of being up her for Febru-hairy! |
They’re Doin’ ChoreographyFebruary 25, 2011Lately, my dancing life is overrun with choreography. I’m currently working on a routine for the lindy hopping Midshipmen for the Naval Academy’s International Ball, choreographing a new solo jazz routine for the upcoming First Sunday Festivals in Annapolis, and working on some jam material for our upcoming dance in March. When I’m out dancing socially, I rarely think about what comes next, the benefit of years of experience and practice. But choreography forces me to think differently. |
Peter & Naomi dancing at the Leapin’ Lindy Berne Show…February 25, 2011Digging Peter’s swivels, as usual. |
