It Goes To Your Toes

From: taintwhatyoudo.wordpress.com |

At this past Stompology, Laura Glaess taught a routine inspired by a clip from the film “Greenwich Village” which I found educational and loads of fun. However when I saw the actual clip online after the event I was captivated by the dancing and the scene that goes on in that film clip. If you haven’t watch the actual clip it has a slow and mellow intro but, it is a great contrast and build up for what comes after.

Herrang Day 3: Challenging Assumptions and the Dreaded Slow Drag

From: www.rikomatic.com |

So starting the second day, my body started pushing back, telling me, "Rik, you aren't 25 anymore."  I was falling asleep all day and night, during class, during the dances, during the camp meeting... basically all the time. My dancing has certainly not in top form, but I pushed through the fatigue.  That must mean … something. Perhaps just that I am stubborn in my old age.

Give Swing a Chance Says Benny Goodman

From: vforvintageblog.blogspot.com |

There is one thing swing critics cannot combat. That is, that the public approves of swing. So why not give it a chance to prove it is not a flash in the pan, but the only really truly American music we have? Every other form of musical expression portrayed as a dance form originated abroad. Swing, as it is now being written and created, originates solely in the minds of musicians who think in the American way.

National Dance Day Part 1 of 2: Honoring Nigel Lythgoe

From: www.atomicballroom.com |

The Second Annual National Dance Day will take place on July 30, 2011 to promote awareness for dance as a medium of expression and storytelling.  More importantly, National Dance Day encourages dance as a passionate and positive platform for health and wellness.

Interview: Kyle Smith, Master DJ

From: swungover.wordpress.com |

Most people you meet in this world start off as acquaintances, then become your friends if you wish to get to know each other better. When master DJ Kyle Smith meets you, however, he instantly becomes your brother, with all the jokes, s$%#&-talking, and confrontation that implies. Once you realize he means it all as a sign of respect and friendship, it’s actually quite endearing, and also means you’re allowed to give it back to him as much as he dishes it out (something you probably can’t do with many other friends of yours). Anyway, I asked my brother Kyle if he wouldn’t mind answering a few questions about something he does better than almost anyone in the world: DJ swing.

Smooth Criminals: My Stompology Thoughts

From: allthecatsjoinin.wordpress.com |

After some time in the ICU of my bed recovering from the Stompology weekend, I’m finally coherent enough to put some thoughts down about my time at Stompology 2011. This was my second year there, and I was just as blown away as the first year. The quality of instruction there is amazing, and I always learn so much about dance. I was particularly taken with Nathan Bugh and Evita Arce and their incredibly thoughtful and articulate teaching.

Herrang Day 2: A Mellower Dance Camp Experience

From: www.rikomatic.com |

It's been a different experience being here Week Two of the Herrang Dance Camp rather than Week Four or Five, when I have come in the past.  This camp is a lot less intense so far than previous times I've been here.  And for the most part, that is a good thing.

Learning Again and Again the Art of Partner Dancing

From: www.rikomatic.com |

Today the advanced group had three classes with just one teaching couple: Jo Hoffberg and Kevin Saint Laurent. They taught something both totally simple and exceedingly difficult: how to lead and follow your partner.

Makeup is like Dancing….say whaaaa?

The Price of Vintage Clothing

From: lindyshopper.com |

I have received a request from Laurel Carpenter to write about evaluating vintage clothing prices, based on the tendency of some vintage retailers and eBay sellers to overprice their vintage pieces. What is worth it? What should you leave on the rack or the proverbial auction block?

Songs of the Month Club: June 2011

From: allthecatsjoinin.wordpress.com |

Happy belated fourth of July, everyone! I actually DJ-ed that night, and spent most of my weekend tracking down patriotic music for dancing rather than writing this blog post. Thankfully, Christina Austin kept things going here with this awesome post on following. In addition to patriotic dance tunes, I also picked up some songs during my adventures at Stompology in Rochester.

Kim Nalley sings Nina Simone… for Dancers!

From: www.rikomatic.com |

Last night I had the pleasure of catching local jazz diva Kim Nalley play a divine set of Nina Simone songs  in the elegant and intimate Rrazz Room at the Hotel Nikko in SF.  Kim has been doing her tribute to the great Nina Simone from mid-June, finishing up on July 17.  What made last night particularly special was that it was specifically organized for dancers as well as listeners.  So of course I had to be there!
