Traveling Archives
Tuesday in BudapestOctober 28, 2011Two nights ago, Kevin and I arrived in Budapest and it’s been an exciting and delightful experience. After getting our luggage, we exited baggage claim to be picked up by a little, charming, old man who drove us to the Novotel. Kevin and I proceeded to check in, and found out that we were at the wrong Novotel. In fact, there are three of them in this glorious city. |

The City Concealed: The Original Swing Street I do so love you,…November 09, 2010I do so love you, Thirteen.org. This is a pretty great 10-minute documentary about West 133rd Street in Harlem, New York, where several black-owned rhythm clubs were concentrated during New York’s Golden Age of Jazz (and simultaneous swing era). |
Guest Blog Post: Brian Gottheil’s Ottawa Swing ExperienceJune 23, 2010So after the University of Toronto’s swing dance club’s beer and chicken wings night out, I had a great discussion with Alex M, Kathleen, and Brian G from Ottawa (previously somewhere not Ottawa) about, what else, the dance scene in Toronto. I won’t bore you with the specifics of that conversation but I remembered that I wanted to post up Brian’s awesome note about his experience dancing in Ottawa’s swing dance scene. So here it is. I highly recommend you give it a good read even if you are not from this scene/city/country because it gives a honest perspective from a dancer’s point of view. Enjoy. |
Dance as a Language: ImmersionMay 11, 2010When I was at the Caveau de La Hauchette in Paris, the phrase “dance is a language” started to truly sink in. This is due to the fact that when attempting to communicate with in French with follows, I could barely understand them. But on the social dance floor we could speak volumes to each other without uttering a single word. |
Swing Dancing Across Asia 2009July 09, 2009Earlier this year, David Trinh (a dancer from Waterloo, ON, Canada) traveled across Asia visiting, dancing and facilitating events and classes in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. Finding himself accumulating video footage and interview notes, he’s decided to create a documentary to show us what’s up in the emerging Asian swing dance communities. |
