Pulse in Lindy and Blues

From: allthecatsjoinin.wordpress.com |

I am a firm believer that pulse is one of the core elements to all social dancing. I can’t claim to have an expert opinion on the matter because I lack knowledge in ballroom/latin/tango. . .basically, anything that isn’t swing. From what I’ve seen though, every dance has its own means of pulse. When we are teaching, Susanne and I emphasize that the pulse is the primary means of communicating rhythm with your partner.

ILHC 2011: The Secret of The Plot

From: jsalmonte.wordpress.com |

I have a soft spot for Naomi. Peter is ok. But one of the things that I’ve always appreciated about Naomi is the sense of class she brings to her dancing. It’s a big reason why I’ve come to believe that Lindy Hop can be used to legitimately express a much wider array of emotions than what most people typically associate with it (Raw, Bad ass, silliness, etc.)  Her Frenesi routine is still one of my favorites.

I Charleston – Berlin

My favorite part is when people are dancing on the cement blocks (1:54) and with the guards (2:10). Gaah, I want video doing that!

Shim Sham for Frankie Manning on May 26!

From: www.rikomatic.com |

Larry Peacock recently issued a call to swing communities around the world to do the Shim Sham line dance on May 26, 2011.  That's the birthday of legendary lindy hopper Frankie Manning, who passed away in 2009 but whose legacy lives on in us.

Hollywood Style Swing Flier

From: taintwhatyoudo.wordpress.com |

“What style are you?” was a popular question that was asked instead of “Would you like to dance?” back in late 90′s. Ask any old-school dancer about “The Style Wars” here in the United States and you will probably elicit a groan that will reach Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden.I won’t rehash the details here, but Jerry Almonte has a nice article in his Artistry in Rhythm series, in his blog Wandering and Pondering that touches the issue. Yehoodi like always, has a post about the style wars.  Bobby White even lampooned it in a Jam Cellar email, coining the term Savollywood.

The Episode Where the Koreans Bring It

I was going to post this right quick on the Facebook Page for Wandering & Pondering, but then I realized that I had more to say a quick blurb.

Behind The Dance: Frida & Skye at ALHC 2005

From: jsalmonte.wordpress.com |

John White over at Black Belt Lindy just posted the second part of an analysis of Frida Segerdahl & Skye Humphries’ 1st place performance from the Classic Division of the 2005 American Lindy Hop Championships. This reminded me of a comment I tried posting to another blog talking about the same clip, but for some reason never got through. (I just checked and the whole blog is gone now)

10 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me

From: allthecatsjoinin.wordpress.com |

When I first started dancing I was super enthusiastic, much to the dismay of many a follow’s arms. I wanted to know big and flashy moves, and for me that meant the Texas Tommy. Now, as I look back at that green well-spring of passion and flailing arms from eleven years ago, there’s so much I wish someone had told me. I mentioned this to Susanne, and she helped me compile this list of things that don’t often get talked about in the lindy world.

When Did You Know You Were Serious About Lindy Hop?

From: allthecatsjoinin.wordpress.com |

Like a lot of people, I had a pretty visceral reaction to lindy hop. A deep feeling of, “Yes, this is exactly how I want to dance.” After that, lindy hop and everything attendant to it–the people, the music, the attire–has been an ever growing obsession. I don’t have the best memory, so it is hard to recall all the of moments when I fell a little bit deeper in love with the dance. I do have a few that come to mind.
