The Mobtown Ballroom Grand Opening: A Baltimore HomecomingOctober 13, 2011At the end of her second encore of the night, after playing for five hours, an exhausted Meschiya Lake motioned for everyone to kneel as she drew out her final chorus. She then joined them on the ground, genuflecting to them as much as they were to her, and drew out a final breathless coda that brought everyone back to their feet, arms outstretched, and thanking her for helping them open this new house of a different kind of worship. |

The Chase – The Move of the Year? Neat recap of ILHC’s…September 08, 2011Neat recap of ILHC’s events from Mikey Pedroza. The Chase sequence really dominated the competition as a great couples move. It’s actually unbelievable how many times the pros did this, and just how many different variations to it they can pull off. Juan & Sharon seem to really love it, and to tell the truth, theirs looks really, really good. |
ILHC 2011 LED Talk: Dorry Segev on Building a SceneSeptember 05, 2011A few weeks back at ILHC they had as an alternative to traditional workshop classes featured at most swing dance events. These were LED talks, short lectures that were entertaining and educational about swing dancing. (If you are unfamilar with the background format of the ILHC LED talks, you can find a description at this link.) One talk I want to go into detail about was Dorry Segev’s talk on building a scene and his experiences as one of the main organizers for the Baltimore scene. |
Midwest Lindy Fest – Invitational Jack & Jill – Michael…August 31, 2011Because I can’t post ILHC videos all day all the time, here’s a neat J&J with Dargoff and Marie. I’ve seen Dargoff dancing before but I didn’t really realize who he was until this past ILHC, in which every dance he competed in became utterly hilarious. I’ve already posted the showcase of infinite swing outs on my personal tumblr, so here’s a more “serious” dance he had. Serious, and yet articles of clothing are still flying off of him. |
Event Review: (ILHC) International Lindy Hop Championships 2011August 30, 2011In spite of a hurricane and an earthquake, ILHC 2011 pressed on this past weekend in Alexandria, Virginia. With attendees from over 20+ different countries this year such as Lithuania and South Korea, ILHC lived up to its name as an international competition. |
ILHC 2011 VendorsAugust 29, 2011I had the pleasure of dancing and competing at this year’s International Lindy Hop Championships, held just outside of Washington, D.C. in Alexandria, Virginia. The event was a unique mix of swing dancers, in varying styles of dance, from around the globe. I think the event is best summed up by saying that ILHC is where you can see all those people you see dancing on YouTube – but there’s nothing better than seeing it live, as a video can’t quite capture the energy these couples and teams generate or the dynamic in the room. |

Event Review: Lindy 500 & Baltimore Lindy OpenAugust 23, 2011If you were wondering what time it was this past weekend, the wrong answer would have been Lindy Focus Boom time. That’s because in the words of Andrew Thigpen, it was actually…. |
